Modern Urban Legend

The legend, Bloody Mary, is about a witch named Mary Bloodsworth. There are many different theories on why she was killed. One reason is she was found guilty of witchcraft and taking children. Another reason was that she was carry a child that did not have a father so the people in the village killed her baby while she watched and then they killed her by slashing her  in the face with broken pieces of glass and being forced to watch in a mirror. It is said that her soul is trapped in a mirror. It is relevant today because it is said that if you turn off the lights and stand in front of the mirror and chant "Bloody Mary" 10 times then she will appear in your mirror and do horrible things to you. This interest people because it is known as a 'Slumber Party Game' that young girls play. It tries to warn society about innocent until proving guilty. Mary was suspected of practicing witch craft but no one really had any proof. It doesn't really mean anything to me. I...

The Name Game

Ashoke means "without sorrow" because he doesn't let the bad times weigh him down. He continues to move forward. In the book it says, "A man who is vulnerable, who has suffered in an inconceivable way" (Lahiri 123). Ashima means " boneless and limitless" I do not believe that this relates to her. Nikhil means "whole and entire." Nikhil is very wholesome meaning that he is very open and true. In the book, "His voice sounds harsh, accusing, but his eyes well with tears. 'Why haven't you told me this until now'"(Lahiri 123). Sonali means, "gold" when she was a baby she put a dollar in her mouth. In the book it says, "She plays with the dirt they've dug up from the yard and threatens to put the dollar bill into her mouth" (Lahiri 63),    My name means "princess". I don't really know how this relates to my personality because I don't want to just say I act like a princess because ...

The Namesake- INTRO

I do not know a lot about my family background. All I know is that my ancestors came from England and entered the United States through New Orleans. My family has always worked with machinery. We currently have a family business that has been passed down over 3 generations. I do not believe that there is any current connections from my ancestors coming from England, however; the family business can be looked at as a 'tradition' because the business gets passed down to the children.

Metaphor

Sadness is the color blue because it is cold and dark. I think this because of the way sadness is portrayed in a person's emotions. When a person is sad they are often down and can't get back up. There are many different reasons a person may be sad. They could be grieving or have depression. The color blue represents many different things. To some people, blue represents the sky and the high heavens above, but when I think of the color blue I think of a dark time. It is common for people to decorate their house with blue because some people think that the color blue represents peace and tranquility.  If someone is down they it is common to say 'why are you so blue?' That is why I think that blue represents sadness. This is not just my theory. Many studies show that the color of sadness is blue. Especially Psychologist that study these types of theories.

Sleeping Beauty

The different stories of “Sleeping Beauty” shapes society’s views towards the women in the story because the story is about a girl waiting for her prince to wake her up with a kiss.  In the Disney version of “Sleeping Beauty” it tells the story of a young princess who was cursed by an evil fairy that she will fall into a deep sleep and only true loves kiss can wake her. In her teen years she falls in love with a man but soon after she pricks her finger and goes into a deep sleep. When the man finds her, he kisses her and she wakes up and they live happily ever after. However there are many different storylines but they all have the same plot. The three stories we read in class displays a young girl that is under a sleeping spell and a man comes to wake her up. In the first story the king raped the girl that was asleep and was woken when giving birth. In the video we watched in class it said that the girl relies on the man and can’t do anything without him. This simply goes against ...

Fairytale

A fairy tale is a story about imaginary and sometimes magical beings. The purpose of a fairly tale is to of course, entertain but it is also to give a type of message that the reader will remember. Most fairy tales used the phrase "Once upon a time" in order to appeal to the younger audience and to indicate that the story is in the past. There are many variations of fairy tales. The typical Disney  fairy tales focus on the more happy stories rather than the dark and mysterious ones. If I had to choose a fairy tale to be in I would choose Peter Pan. I really like this story because of the magic behind it. I like the idea of being able to fly around and having a close group of friends to share adventures with. Tinkerbell is my favorite character in the story because she is a fairy and it is said that when a child laughs a fairy is born. I would be Tinkerbell because she can fly and she has magical powers. Even though the tale of Peter Pan  is mainly about his feud between Capt...

The Origin of Ants

The meaning of the Chinese folktale is about a good man who never killed anything and has a good heart. The man has pieces of silver in a jar and a bunch of ants got in the jar and ate all of the silver. The family went to go kill all of the ants who ate the silver. The kind man did not think it was right to kill all of the ants. The man was taken to a nice palace to meet a king. The king praised him on not killing the ants and being kind. It was all a dream. My interpretation when reading this story was to be kind. Because the man did not think it was right to kill the ants and did not kill the ants he was rewarded be the king. The moral of the story is to be kind to everything. The smallest acts of kindness will mean so much to others. I liked this story. It had a good meaning behind it and it was not hard to understand.
